Learning to Write Again

I’ll admit it’s somewhat ironic that I’ve managed to procrastinate my first Flatiron School blog post, especially when considering my professional background.

When I graduated college with an English degree, my options were pretty limited when it came to gainful employment. Marketing, public relations, or communications. And if you ask me, they’re all facets on the same gem. As it turns out, that gem wasn’t exactly a diamond. It was a soul-sucking, profit-driven, artificially manufactured piece of shining fakery. Eventually, I decided that I just couldn’t force-feed consumers products that they didn’t need anymore, and decided to put my tech-savvy nature to the test in a 180-degree career change.

Speaking of gems, I’ve been working on learning Ruby as part of my first phase at Flatiron. It’s a pretty straightforward programming language, and I’m enjoying using my brain a bit more than usual. Though I’ll admit, I’m a bit rusty.

For me, the main draw to programming was the fact that it allows for both logic and creativity. The prospect of being able to build something that could potentially improve or simplify someone’s life was really piqued my curiosity, and a few weeks after making the decision to take the plunge I was accepted into the Flatiron School.

I’m looking forward to honing my programming skills and — eventually — entering into a career that is less subjective, sales-driven, and disingenuous. That is a future I can get behind! And although I could probably fill this blog out with more pomp and circumstance, I think it’s fair to say that I signed up for coding bootcamp to learn to write in a language other than English.

All in all though, I’m really looking forward to the next few weeks. To meeting new people. To learning new concepts and logic. And to turning over a new leaf when it comes to my professional career. Huzzah!
